hmmm... a new way to waste time! [Feb. 19th, 2009|09:56 am]
[Current Location |Home sick with a cold]
[mood | lethargic]

Well, this past Sunday night I found a new way to kill time... and LOTS of it - Facebook. It so far seems to be very demanding of my attention. 20-30 text and email messages received each day. I will have to see how long I can deal with THAT and whether it is all worth it. Anybody else out there have any words of wisdom on how to manage Facebook rather than have it manage me? THANKS!

Wow. Later this week, we celebrate our first anniversary in the new house. How quickly this past year has flown by. We are all pretty well installed here, though there is still a lot of stuff out at the old house, including my storage buildings and a lot more Christmas decorations - mostly boxes of lights I got on sale after Christmases Past. Sounds like New Year's Resolution material to me....
Well, we got the BIG BIG Tree up in the front yard yesterday before Paul had to rush off to play WOW. While I was fine tuning it, several passers-by stopped their cars and wow-ed about how pretty it is. While we ate dinner, I could see out the front and every car that passed slowed down to stare. I have to admit it IS pretty... and big. Approximately 25 feet tall with 900 lights on it. All but the 100 at the top in the star are LED so the whole thing is burning around 50 watts of electricity. I also finished getting the lights arranged on the tree in the living room and organized some of the rest of the decorations. Tonight, Paul and I will hang all the ornaments on the tree and the big wreath outside the second floor of the house. And more lights for the front porch.

Friday Night [Jul. 17th, 2006|07:39 am]
WOW WOW WOW.. What a great time we had Friday night. To celebrate my birthday, Paul and Ed had all the guys over for a great party. Paul, Ed and Jon, Charles, Turner, Swin & David, Brad & Paul, Todd & Juan, Miles, Johnny, Calvin, Grant & Ryan, and Greg were all in attendance and relatively well behaved! Great food and great company!! Can't even begin to talk about how happy I was! To cap off the evening, when I was done opening the GENEROUS gifts I received, our most excellent friend, Swin [info]swindunbar sang an original birthday song he wrote for me! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! To each and all of you that was there (and some that would have been if they weren't sick or out of town!). I love you all and you truly make me feel very special. Special thanks to Paul and Ed for bringing us all together!

Another milestone [Jul. 15th, 2006|09:39 am]
WOW!!!! where do I begin? This week I had to suffer through the mental anguish of another birthday - this one being the one I have dreaded the most, No. 50. FIFTY. 1/2 century. I am now officially able to retire from work. Join the AARP. I am OLD. (I hope you get the picture.) Well, anyway, I wasn't looking forward to this milestone at all. Paul [info]bearcubbnc and Ed [info]bfebear have been very supportive and keep telling me that it's no big deal. Well, I didn't fall for it at all! So, on Thursday, I went in to work dreading having to deal with some "festivities." Fortunately, most of them there forgot about it. My next-door neighbour, Toni, always is good about remembering birthdays and had me a big cake that we shared with the few good folks there and the rest of the losers that I am saddled with. I was pretty busy and didn't have a lot of time to think about the day. Meetings in the morning and meetings in the afternoon. Paul had been after me to pick a place for dinner and after replying "McDonalds" way too many times, I told him let's just get some Chinese take out and eat in at his apartment. I was hoping Ed was going to join us for dinner-and-a-movie, but he had errands to run. So we had a GREAT relaxing dinner and watched "Pacific Heights." Since it was still 150 degrees in the shade at dusk, we decided to go to the pool and splash in the cool water there, leaving a note for Ed to join us if he returned. We had a nice soak and then headed back to the apartment just as Ed was getting in with some shopping. By this time it was getting pretty late and I headed home to take care of the animals there and get some sleep. I survived!

Such a good time [Jun. 25th, 2006|10:25 am]
Here we are in the middle of Toronto Pride again! WOW! I don't know many things that can compete with this party. I sure love our little group at home, and all the things we do together (and I wouldn't trade them for ANYTHING) but in the category of "10,000 people or more," Toronto Pride RULES. There is enough organization to keep things in line and enough disorganization to keep it fun. A good balance for sure, eh? (I have learned to speak the language here - you turn every sentence into a question by adding "eh?" somewhere either in the middle or end!) Paul [info]bearcubbnc and I have been spending some high-quality time with friends, old and new, this week. I wish I could name you all here, but won't to avoid leaving anyone out! THANKS GUYS, FOR TAKING GOOD CARE OF US!

We are severely disappointed to learn that our good friend Joe C from Lockport (who generously put up with us for 2 days on our way up here!) is suffering from a miserable summer cold and won't make it up for The Parade or festivities today. WE SURE HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER SOON! I hear that Nurse Mike B is there to take care of him and pamper his every need.

Tomorrow morning at oh-early-thirty we will pack up and head back home. Sigh! Another TO Pride will be in the bag and now history. I am generally at a loss for words. One day there are close to a million people in a huge street party and by 9 am the next morning, the street is back to normal again. It's an amazing transition that the City of Toronto and Toronto Pride carries off every year with such skill. One thing I have noticed this year is a much larger police presence. Usually, you don't see more than a dozen or so uniformed officers. Just from a rough estimate, I would guess there are three times that many this year. Another sigh! A sign of the times, I guess - one of the more distressing ones.

WOO HOO!! Here we are in Toronto for Pride! YEA!!! Seeing all the old friends here (of course, I have to mention Rob (RJ-TO) in particular since he is allowing us to use his apartment here while we are in town! THANKS ROB! WE SURE LOVE YOU!) as well as meeting some new ones! Paul has been keeping our dance card full with all the LJ friends that we have been hanging out with, and as always, the eye-candy is outstanding! We have a couple of events planned for today. Our friends John and Craig are having friends at their apartment (in the same building as Rob) for an afternoon party and, later on, we will be heading to Jon's place for a BBQ with he and Ed. We will get to meet his roomie, Brody, and Brody's guest for the weekend. YEA!! And then there is The Parade on Sunday. IT IS HUGE!! Over three hours long covering the better part of 20 city blocks. The crowds are amazing.

Ellie is here with us and adjusting quite well from being a country dog to dealing with urban living. Her trips to the Pooh-parkette next door to the condo building have become part of her routine now. But, as much fun as she is having, I know that she will enjoy getting back to her kitties and home turf. To be quite truthful, so will I. I love Lockport and Toronto; I have become familiar enough with the cities to get around the most basic parts of them now; but I also have become enough of a hermit to want to get back to my little hovel in Durham (shocking, isn't it!).

Paul [info]bearcubbnc is so much better at this blogging than I. He has much more talent for including pics and more details!

The past couple weeks [Nov. 27th, 2005|07:27 pm]
Hello all! Sorry I haven't updated Live Journal in a while. Been very busy with life and work and life and work and life and work.

Let's see. Where do I begin. Several weeks ago, I realized that one of my cats was not well. His half brother died two years ago from cancer and now Baby was exhibiting the same symptoms. He lasted a couple weeks. He was a pure-bred Siamese with a very distinctive personality. He was very talkative and had the loudest purr of any cat I have ever known. I found him at home when I got home from work one day two weeks ago. I buried him next to his brother. People at work, and most important to me, my adopted "family" of friends have all be so very supportive. THANK YOU ALL!

This the last day of Thanksgiving holiday week. Paul has been here with me since Wednesday evening! YEAH!!He helped me shop for Turkey Day supplies and then cook on Thursday. We packed all the stuff up and carried it to my Mom's house to eat. Went well, even though she had forgotten we were coming and ate a peanut butter sandwich before we got there. We all pigged out then spent some time with her new kittens.
Paul and I spent the rest of the weekend doing yard work and Paul made some amazing headway in the kitchen cleaning and organizing. THANKS PAUL!! I love you!

Saturday night, we met up with our friends Turner, David, Curtis, Bo and Shaun for dinner, then back to T&D's place for cards. What a great time we had. We were joined there by Heath and played Uno until after midnight. The simple things are sometimes the most fun! When we got home, I got an email from buddies Zac and Charles, who had gone to Zac's family home in Alabama for the holiday. When they returned home, they found that their home had been broken into and several item stolen, including Charles' car. What a lousy way to end their holiday! By Sunday morning, the car had been located (burned) and they were busy taking an inventory of missing items. Fortunately, none of Zac's computer equipment (work stuff) was gone.

So, I end this holiday period with some negative things and some very positive ones in my head. Some time soon I will have to start thinking about Christmas and putting up decorations and shopping and all the scary stuff related. Pray for me!

Hugs to you all!

Today [Oct. 12th, 2005|10:29 pm]
Today was a total mix of emotions for me. Work sucked. OK, so that is every day. I should get used to it - yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. Maybe some day I will write a book about my experiences working for a local government. But on the the good part - the hockey game. My partner [info]bearcubbnc and I won tickets to a Carolina Hurricanes game. Sweet seats, Row G on the aisle! Got some great pics! Paul and I had such a good time, even WITH the seat-squatters that parked themselves in front of us after the first period. The game moved along quickly and, if you can believe it, Carolina WON!! 7 - 2 over the Washington Capitals! The crowd really loved it and made the whole experience that much better for us.

But I digress. I am heading home now to feed the critters and "Smelly" Ellie. Some day I will fill up a hard drive talking about them.

First posting [Oct. 6th, 2005|10:58 pm]
well, here I am doing something I thought I would never do! I plan to post at least weekly, but if I don't it's because I am tied up with real life. Those bastards!! More stuff to write about!

Well, I have spent the past two days at home. When I woke up yesterday and reached for the snooze buton I screamed. It hurt that bad. I don't know what caused it, but I had some extreme pain. I hobbled out to feed the cats and let Dawg out and then collapsed on the sofa. After searching for the power supply, I spent the next two days attached to my vibrating heating pad. Along with a little naprox, I will be OK in a couple days. If I feel better in the morning, I am going to try to head back to work. I know.. why bother, it's Friday. Well, I have a ton of stuff to do and I'm not getting anything done at home anyway. Well, at least I have been able to catch up on a lot of TV that I have been saving on the DVR and clear out some space for this weekend's shows. Fortunately, not a lot on the schedule this weekend - maybe I can get some rehab time it. Although, if I feel better, I have a ton of housework to do!

All for now. I will write again soon.
